Cabo money page · book-first shortlist

What I would book first for Cabo San Lucas before touching a single restaurant list.

Cabo San Lucas is easy to overshop. Every resort concierge, every TikTok, and every marina hawker will hand you a different plan. Lock the friction reducers first: airport transfer, one boat day, one nature or whale-watch anchor if the season is right, then let dinners, beach clubs, and pool days stay flexible.

The four decisions that keep Cabo from becoming 47 tabs and a timeshare pitch.

01

Airport transfer (SJD → Cabo/Corridor)

SJD is a real drive — 30 to 45 minutes to San José del Cabo, 45 to 60 to Cabo San Lucas. This is not where you want a jet-lagged, first-night negotiation with a timeshare rep dressed as a driver.

  • Best for SJD arrivals into either San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas
  • Protects check-in day and skips the timeshare booth entirely
  • Confirm pickup point, terminal, and bag count before booking

02

Sunset sail or snorkel boat day

Cabo is a boat town. Pick one boat day and stop shopping the marina. A sunset sail past Land's End and El Arco is the postcard. A morning snorkel at Chileno or Santa Maria is the water version.

  • Best as the first real afternoon
  • Pick sunset sail OR morning snorkel — not both in one trip unless you love boats
  • Book the boat itself, not a marina walk-up
Browse boat days
03

Whale watch (Dec–Apr only)

If your trip is December through April, this is the anchor. Gray and humpback whales run right through the bay. Outside that window, skip it and put the money into the boat day above.

  • Best mid-Dec through mid-April
  • Morning departures are the calm water
  • Bring a windbreaker even in Cabo

04

Desert ATV, camel, or Todos Santos day

Only book this if you want the not-a-pool-day version of Cabo. ATV in the dunes, a camel ride on Migriño Beach, or a slow half-day up to Todos Santos will make the trip feel like more than resort loungers.

  • Best for stays of four nights or more
  • Protect a full half-day and hydrate hard
  • Verify pickup zone (Corridor pickups are common)

Fast rule

If you only book one thing, book the SJD airport transfer.

It removes the first-night stress, kills the timeshare-booth problem before it starts, and makes the rest of the trip easier to solve. After that, add one boat day and stop there until you know which side of the Corridor you are actually staying on.

Stay zone quick map

Where you sleep changes the whole trip.

Cabo San Lucas (Marina / Medano)

Loud, walkable, boat access. Best if you want nightlife, marina restaurants, and Medano Beach in your morning walk.

  • Boat day = short walk
  • Sleep quality = medium
  • Uber/taxi to San José = 40+ min

The Corridor (Tourist / Palmilla)

Big resorts, quiet water, calm. Best if you came for the pool, spa, and one or two anchor bookings — not the marina scene.

  • Boat day = 15–25 min transfer
  • Sleep quality = high
  • Uber pricing = higher, plan it in

San José del Cabo (Historic center)

Slower, arty, better local restaurants, art walk on Thursdays in season. Best if you would rather feel like you are in Baja than at a resort.

  • Boat day = 30+ min transfer
  • Sleep quality = high
  • Best for repeat visitors

East Cape / Los Barriles

Fishing, kite-surf, remote. Skip on a first trip unless you already know why you are going.

  • Boat day = long drive
  • Sleep quality = high
  • Best for anglers and kiteboarders

The $9 founding mini-kit is Tulum-first while I build out Cabo — but request it with Cabo as your destination and I will prioritize the Cabo version. Real requests get built before generic guides.
